Dharma HallVolume VIIIDo Not Seek Outside
The Mind Seeks Externally; Train It to Seek Inward
Sūtra 615: "The mind seeks externally; therefore train it to seek inward." The mind's default is outward-running. Practice begins with pulling it back. Sūtra 616's cook analogy: "Take up the signs of your own mind; do not let it scatter." Sūtra 617's bird analogy: the four foundations of mindfulness are your territory; the five sense-desires are someone else's ground.
