Light a Lamp

One lamp before the Buddha breaks the darkness of a thousand years. The temple lights merit lamps for devotees near and far: the day the office receives your donation, a physical lamp is lit before the altar in your name — seven days to a period, and for a pressing need several periods may follow on. On a Buddha's or Bodhisattva's birthday, a birthday candle is lit besides, complete within the day. Complete the fields below; on submission you receive a registration number.

The 49-Day Medicine Buddha Blessing

Each year, forty-nine days before the Medicine Buddha's Birthday, the temple begins the 49-day blessing — this year from 21 September, completing on the birthday, 8 November: the venerable master chants the Medicine Buddha Sutra daily with the lamps kept burning before the Buddha for forty-nine days, each registered name carried in the daily dedication for the dispelling of calamity and the lengthening of life. The practice is the sutra's own prescription — the Bodhisattva Salvation-Deliverer teaches: worship and make offering to the World-Honored Medicine Buddha through the six periods of day and night; recite this sutra forty-nine times; light forty-nine lamps; and keep their light unbroken for forty-nine days — so one "may pass beyond peril and hardship, untouched by untimely death and harmful spirits" (Sutra of the Medicine Buddha's Original Vows, trans. The Tai Sui Lamp

Placing a Tai Sui lamp is a custom of the Han seasonal year, not a practice from the sutras; the temple follows the custom without setting up a separate altar — the lamp is offered before the Buddha. Anyone who wishes may register, whatever their birth sign and whether or not the almanac counts it a year of conflict. From the first day of the lunar year the venerable master chants the Medicine Buddha Sutra daily, dedicating the merit for a year of peace; each registered name is listed in the Tai Sui hall until the closing rite in the twelfth month. The donation is of any amount, and those unable to donate are equally welcome. After registering, the temple mails the Tai Sui talisman (one to twelve per registration, as you request) together with this year's lunar almanac booklet. The day is a supporting condition; the resolve is the true cause.

The Perennial Lamp

The perennial lamp takes a donation of any amount — and welcomes those who have none to donate: the lamp does not choose its people, and a prayer is not priced. To ask for one, simply email the office with the name and the prayer.

Averting Calamity
Lit for the dispelling of calamity and obstruction — that hindrances melt away and misfortune keep its distance.
