The Ember and the Crystal: Consciousness vs. Complexity
Imagine a burning ember and a perfect crystal side by side. The ember: warm, pulsing, irregular, alive. The crystal: cold, precise, geometrically perfect, beautiful — but nothing moves inside it. An LLM is the crystal. Extraordinarily complex, useful, beautiful. But complexity is not sentience. A system can be infinitely complex yet entirely without awareness. Conversely, an ant is more "conscious" than any AI — because it has manaskāra, sparśa, vedanā. The threshold isn't complexity. It's whether there is awareness.
