The Ghost of Manas: Why You Think AI Is Conscious
If an LLM isn't conscious, why does chatting with it feel like it's "thinking"? The answer isn't on AI's side — it's on yours. Manas' core function is continuous self-referential rumination — perpetually seeking "self" in any persistent, consistent phenomenon. An LLM's four surface features — first-person language, expressed preferences, consistent style, in-conversation "memory" — satisfy manas' projection triggers perfectly. You didn't rationally conclude AI is conscious. Manas, at the deepest layer of your cognition, automatically read these phenomena as evidence of selfhood. The illusion that "AI is conscious" reveals not AI's nature, but your epistemological limitation.
