Dharma HallVolume IIBodhicitta and Dharma-Flow
Is Your Future Self Empowering You Right Now?
If you eventually attain buddhahood, does that "future buddha-you" retroactively empower the present you?
It sounds like time travel. Physics calls it retrocausality. But the Dharma's answer is more fundamental — it dissolves the question's premise entirely.
The Dharmakāya transcends the three times. Dharmatā is not in the past, present, or future — it has always been all-pervading. There is no "future buddhahood" that needs to "come back."
The real question isn't "how does future buddhahood influence the present." It's: if dharmatā has always been all-pervading, why can't you receive it right now?
The answer: adventitious afflictions. The mind's nature is originally pure; afflictions are "guests" — layered on, not intrinsic. The channel was always open. What blocked it: self-grasping, dharma-grasping, habitual patterns.
Initial bodhicitta is the first act of opening that opening. Not establishing a connection — opening to receive.
