Is Manas Hijacking Your Good Deeds?

Cheng Weishi Lun, fascicle 5: ordinary beings' acts of giving are "hijacked" by manas. Manas perpetually constructs "self," making your giving automatically carry "I'm doing something good," "they should be grateful," "look at my merit." This is giving with attachment. The Diamond Sūtra: giving with attachment is entering a dark room; giving without attachment is sunlight illuminating everything. The difference isn't in the act, but whether the mind clings. Do a thousand good deeds, each labeled "I'm doing good" — and manas feeds on every one.
